![]() It's slow due to the lack of movement abilities, and it's very linear. ![]() I do think that Hollow Knight's beginning is very weak, though. The dash is one of the first abilities you unlock, so you aren't very far in the game at all. Having to pay for the map stuff is a bit dumb, but they're cheap enough that it doesn't make that much of a difference in my opinion. However, I do think most of your points are valid, even if I don't fully agree they're as big of a problem as you do. ![]() You'll probably get downvoted to hell, and have lots of people tell you that you're wrong. If you don't like Castlevania you will know the reason you like Hollow Knight and that'll be the graphics. It is the polar opposite of Hollow Knight. The gameplay is better but the graphics are worse. If you don't believe me: go play Castlevania SOTN. I wish this game was better but is is just overhyped and has a lot of issues and the reason it is overhyped is because the graphics and environment are incredible. I just have no interest in continuing this game as I know it will be a grind. READ PLS: I really wanted to like this game and I won't be refunding it since I like supporting creators of unique and creative games. Did I almost do it? Or was I not even close? That feeling is important in these kind of games as it motivates the player to keep trying. The first boss I beat on my second try and the first time I tried beating him was very unsatisfying because when I failed I had no indicator of how well I did. No Boss Health Bars: When you make a boss enemy with probably 20x the health of the player, you need to put a health bar or else the player feels like he is not making any progress. In contrast to Castlevania the player gets so many different abilities and gets access to a dash early on so it has a better foundation. So all this tells me is that this game is going to be an annoying grind against enemies way stronger than me and the only thing I can see happening to me in this game is I get more health and more health doesn't mean anything it just makes the game play repetitive. And the fact that I have no reason to believe he ever gets a new weapon or means of fighting, that leads me to also believe he has no means of actually getting stronger. And of course the cover of the game has him holding that weapon. One being several NPCs say that the player should be fine as long as he has his Nail so I have no reason to believe I need any other weapon. Now, I'm assuming the Nail is the only weapon you have the entire game for a number of reasons. Really bad game design to not include a dash initially.Ĭombat is very dull: Combat is literally just one attack with one weapon the nail. I'm jumping to the left to avoid their attacks when I should be dashing. In Hollow Knight, I find myself fighting enemies and especially the bosses looking like an idiot. You are given the abilities initially and they are expanded upon. In Bloodborne, Castle Crashers, Gears of War, Halo, and many more games, you aren't restricted from using basic combat/movement abilities. Maybe there is a dash mechanic in this game that I haven't unlocked yet but theres my initial point again: why do I need to unlock basic things like this that make the game fun? Let me give you examples. Lack of mobility: I find myself fighting enemies by avoiding their attacks by jumping away from them when there should be a dash mechanic in this game. Your amazing environment already conveys a sense of mystery so the map paywall upgrades is just bad man. I think its very bad game design honestly. But after I got the map upgrades like the Quill and the one that shows me where I am on the map things became more enjoyable and I don't see the design sense in not giving this to the player at the start. It really stopped me from enjoying the game initially. Relative to Castlevania where they show you where you've been, this game shows you nothing until you buy a map upgrade. The fun of a game like this is exploring every nook of the map but when I first started playing the game I found myself hopelessly lost. Here's my reasons.īasic Metroidvania mechanics locked behind a grind wall: I should not have to earn the basic features of a Metroidvania game like a functioning map. I just bought this game and I have to express my opinion of this game.
